Everybody at INNER Circle is so supportive and helpful; I can’t find words to describe the appreciation for all the input, support and guidance that I get from the INNER Circle members. In a short time (with the help of my INNER Circle friends) I’ve managed to get in contact with so many positive leads and prospects, it would have taken me years to get where I am now. Just to share something with you,

I’ve attend a function at a Hotel on the 2nd, they hosted this function for there big corporate clients. (I was the only person invited to display my products) and was able to meet with +- 100 secretaries from various companies. Needless to say, I had a wonderful opportunity and a successful day and in the same process won a 2 night stay for 2 people at a 4 star hotels in Cape Town. How is that for networking??? I would like to give some feedback to all members of the INNER CIRCLE who have not yet attended a meeting in the flesh so to speak. I was like some members, laying a little low, I thought, I'd join the site and see what gives. Well, to be honest there is only so much you can do by connecting online. You can make friends online, even arrange a few one on one meetings online and , if you're lucky, some business may be had. In fact, I have connected with Graham Mitchel of ActionCoach and have joined him to coach me in my quest to build a great business. I'm glad to report that that is going very well.I digress. The point is, that successful networking will, sooner or later, require some face to face contact.

So I decided that I would take the next step and joint the meeting at Benvenuto Conference Centre on friday the 30th July. In fact, I was so looking forward to it that I miss-read my clock and arrived an hour to early! When the folks all started arriving it quickly became apparent to me that these people don't just meet and sit down and talk business, but that everyone knows very one and are friends. When the meeting got underway, we were all welcomed by Brian Carter, our host for the evening who allowed us to briefly introduce ourselves. I forgot to mention that there were 25 people in the meeting and the room was quite full! Seems there were others like myself who just 'arrived'.

After introductions, Brian afforded everyone a chance to talk about their business and the services they provide. There was some banter between the members who knew each other well which was nice and gave the meeting a pleasant informal atmosphere.There was a short Presentation by Michael about Email marketing which I felt was a bit of a teaser and we are all waiting to learn more. At the end of the meeting Tervor Nel, who is one of the co-founders of INNER CIRCLE, gave everyone an update on the huge project he is involved with and expressed his excitement about the meeting and the possibilities of connections.

What I learned, other than who everyone is and what they do, is that there are many ways to connect. Judging from the multiple Joint Ventures (JV's) that several members had formed there is a lot of scope to do business. It is also recommended that you attend regularly, to give everyone a chance to get to know you, I think it makes sense that having a more personal relationship with each other will make connecting and referring prospects to each other easier. The most important thing I learned is that bringing ideas to the meeting is most valuable. Ideas which you might have floating around and don't know what to do with if brought to the meeting might well be your next big thing, your next big contract. I also feel it is important not to worry that someone at the meeting already does what you do, the important thing to remember is that we need to have an attitude of abundance, there is plenty for everyone, especially those who band together like the INNER CIRCLE.

I will probably be attending the Fairlands meeting every month and then attend some of the other venues on occasion. Perhaps I can ask for comments about attending different meetings at different locations.

I am excited to have this connection and I encourage those of you who have not yet attended a meeting, to make a plan.

Just to give a bit of a background as to how I came to yesterday’s meeting – I’m going through some tough times in my business and looking for a solution. I enjoyed our meeting tremendously. There were various areas of value to me. Firstly it was invigorating to listen to other people’s ideas in business and their passion for what they were doing. I was amazed at the creativity that abounded.

Secondly, it taught me a lot in terms of doing business and promoting yourself. The idea that you have to be perfect and the best before you start out in a venture was finally erased from my mind. Everybody can make a contribution and everybody’s contribution is worthwhile. “Worrying about the Competition” is best avoidable as it is merely a figment of one’s imagination and an excuse not to start with an idea.
Thank you for demonstrating that to me. I am looking forward to seeing you all again!

Thirdly, you confirmed my believe that together we can achieve more. In my field there has been a general attitude and philosophy of keeping “my business and practice” to myself in order to avoid “competition”. It is sometimes very difficult to teach private practitioners that they can share and that it is very positive for business. When we started to build our Medical Centre nine years ago we were a few that really struggled to educate the other practitioners that you can have more than one practitioner in a field under one roof and working together rather than being in competition. Your meeting yesterday confirmed that our intuition was right and that that is the way forward.

I attended my first INNER Circle meeting about two years ago and for me it didn't really catch on. I clearly didn't understand the concept... I tried again about six months ago and have been going regularly ever since.

The reason for this is that a great number of people that I met two years ago were still attending the meetings which made me think that there must be something to this. They cant all be mad.

So I decided to be open to the process and expect nothing in return.

In those two years I was involved in two hijackings, the last of which involved my two daughters and myself and was shot during the process. To say my outlook toward South Africa was jaded would be an understatement and I could give 101 reasons why it was time to get out and couldn't give you anything beyond our great weather as a reason to stay.

My renewed association with INNER Circle opened my eyes.

Suddenly here were so many fantastic people building their business' and helping one another, talking to each other about opportunities and the best part is the complete mix of ages, colours, genders and business'.

No one business or person is more important than the other.

If we could harness this optimism and motivation the sky is the limit for South Africa.

The fact that we are there to do business is the bonus.

Anyone considering joining a networking forum, I urge you to be open to the process, expect nothing and get involved.

Even if you never get a single referral (which is unlikely) the motivation and excitement alone will spur you to take your business to levels you never dreamed possible.

Hi all,

I went to this meeting with a lot of apprehensiveness I as I had just been mugged for the third time in 18 months on the previous Monday, and thought that what the hell am I doing in this country.

Mario insisted that I should go as I would have nothing to lose and every thing to gain, and with this in mind I went.

With the anger I was feeling at the time I thought that 'ok, ill have a few beers and then go home'.

I did not think that I would be asked to speak to the members that were there, but as it happened I did, and with the then anger that I had in me I started to tell the members what I was all about and what I had achieved since I had started my company.

When I had finished speaking I was amazed at the immediate feed back that I got from the members that would be able to assist me in getting the company to greater heights.

I walked out of there another man, positive, proud and willing to face the world again, without having to feel that I was a failure after what had happened to me.

My psychologist was amazed at the transformation that had come over me from the time I saw him on the Wednesday, and the only thing I can ascribe this to be the fact that I had so much positive energy absorbed from the members in the INNER Circle that it put me on the right track again.

I can see and feel that my company can only prosper from the INNER Circle and its members.

I thank one and all or what you all did for me and wish that we all can go from strength to strength and make the money that is out there for the likes of us to reap.

I have been a member of BNI (Business Network International) for close on 5 years and served as President of the Cresta Chapter for a year. One can't really compare the two forums as they are very different. But, of course, I am happy to let you know what I thought.

The venue was very nice - a bit noisy, but if you listened carefully, it wasn't a problem. Loved the pictures - hope everyone starts to take note of ALL the walls around them, wherever they go, especially empty ones that need my creative touch.

I thought the mix of businesses was excellent - I come across many different types of businesses at BNI, but was fascinated by quite a few of the ideas eminating from the various businesses represented. Flick's business was fascinating, and I liked her belief that if you are trying to do business in another country, especially if there is a culture and language barrier, it is better to train someone from that environment, who speaks the language and understands the culture, and for them to pursue the business on your behalf.

I wasn't aware that I had to make a presentation last night, but would like to congratulate everyone on their talks and power point presentations (well done Mariet!) I was certainly enlightened by the time I left. I like the idea of everyone getting a chance to talk or do a presentation - at BNI you only get 60 seconds a week and it isn't enough time to explain your business properly. My business is easier than others as it is a "show and tell" business, but some businesses need presentations and certainly longer than 60 seconds to get the message across. It has a far greater impact when each person gets time to speak about their business in a little more depth. Not only does it help the audience to understand what they do, but you also get to meet the "person" behind the business.

I thought Trevor's enthusiasm was wonderful and his suggestions for potential synergy between businesses is really beneficial, especially to those who are new to networking. Most people find networking difficult at first, but it does get easier - you just need to work at it, and work at it some more. It becomes a way of life and a part of your life.

Thanks for a wonderful meeting. I will come up with some creative ideas before the next meeting and will share them with you.

As mentioned, I have a function on Thursday 27 November - I would have loved to be at the Inner Circle meeting, BUT I will see you all in January. I am hoping to bring my Interior Decorator friend with me, who is a member of another chapter of BNI - we do a lot of work together. No doubt it will be a "show and tell" - I will bring my string canvases to show you.

Even as “a new boy on the block” being my first meeting, I felt very at ease. This is in stark contrast to another type of business networking meeting that I attended the next day. The best that I could manage was to have one person agree that I could phone them the next week with the possibility of arranging a meeting.

Congratulations to Trevor on developing a culture of people looking for business relationships with others who attend The INNER Circle meetings. This together with Trevor’s great strength of connecting the right people makes this forum a winner.

As always, you bring something new to the table and stir up emotions that as business entrepreneurs, know we have, but for some reason, just don’t change our mindset in order to shift from the one scale to the bigger picture.
For most people Change means uncertainty and upsets the routine to which they are accustomed to. It brings on feelings of negativity and self doubt.
Workshops such as yours, allows the attendees, that much needed alone time to seriously re-consider the necessary steps forward, in order to achieve the goals and dreams we all so badly want.

I have & would repeatedly recommend Mark the CEO to all business Entrepreneurs for his never ending patience and personal attention to detail. He has my thumbs up and my partners and I will follow him, wherever he may go.

Tuesday night's Vodacom INNER Circle meeting at the Palazzo was definitely a fantastic evening. Aside from the awesome canapés, which are different and tastier every time, the group of people in attendance had an air of expectancy and excitement about it.

Having the execs from Vodacom was a great value add, in terms of the level of people that they are, and the different aspects of business and experience that they brought to the meeting. Even though it did not seem at first that they were 'the right people' to be there, they were all forthcoming and open in their interest in the concept of the meeting, and the future potential of where the INNER Circle wants to take this relationship.

Added to that was their willingness to put people in touch with the right people in order to achieve potential business goals. Not many people are willing to do that, and that to me is a mark of a great networker, and a person who shows a genuine interest in others. Even more so, for me I realised that an executive level of person is still a person, who chats to me on a normal human level, but whose presence I value, as I was able to interact with them, learn from them, and begin a relationship with various levels of potential, both on the human level and the business level.

In the few months that I have been an INNER Circle member, I have experienced the exponential growth that happens in people's businesses as a result of this forum. The opportunity to meet people is the most valuable for me, and the INNER Circle has brought this to a new level. For this reason I am very excited about the Vodacom INNER Circle collaboration vision you put forward. The opportunity to meet 200000 people who are cherry-picked has massive potential for my business. But even more importantly, this opportunity to grow the network of the INNER Circle to incredible proportions has got to be one of the best ideas in a long time. I think the BEST Yet was definitely true - for me personally, for the first time ever, I had not one, but TWO people approach me asking to see me for financial planning. Pro's, con's, good, bad...? I can't think of anything other than pro's and good. Well, perhaps a con is that there is never enough time to hear everyone talk for a decent time. But that's why we try to meet with them afterwards during the wine and canapes. So it goes from a con to a pro!

I actually got into trouble with my wife for not eating my dinner when I got home. I believe that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Well it was a free dinner. Anyway, great food and wines. A friendly smile from a waiter, who is not expecting a tip, is always welcomed. Very good service. That little bit extra that makes such a big difference. I did go to the restaurant to check out the menu. My wife and I will definitely be coming for dinner at the Palazzo. Thank you for that.

I am SO pleased that I could make last night! What an inspiring experience, from beginning to end! As a “Capie”, this was my first experience of the Palazzo – what a gracious venue. The signposting was excellent, though the place is huge, and I did not know the area, I found the hotel, and convenient parking easily. The staff at the door were very helpful and courteous – personally showed me to the venue. So I was happy and felt good even before I walked into the venue.
The interesting mix of people, from a wide variety of businesses, all with positive vibes and interesting stories. Even where some people were “competitors” (mainly in the people development and event management fields) their approach was collaborative and open-minded, rather than defensive, and I was pleased to be able to talk to several people about possible synergies.

Although my programme for the week was already full, I did manage to fit in a – very interesting – discussion with Chris Dykes this afternoon. I have learned that if I come up again, I must leave space for follow-up meetings after attending an INNER Circle session. Luckily my partner, Lu-Marié is in Johannesburg, and several people have said they will follow up with her.
And then the highlight – the post-meeting! The excellent, decorative and beautifully presented eats, and “kuiering” with interesting people over great wines. I was really sorry that I had to get back to Pretoria, so had to leave early. Next time I will also plan better! There are still many other people with whom I want to follow up – but that can happen only once I get back to the Cape, as this week is FULL.

Network effectively to secure clients

BUSINESS consultants often rely on service providers and word of mouth to market their services, but joining a networking forum, especially one that counts hundreds of business owners as its members, may be an effective way to bring in new business.
But attending a networking session can often leave you with little else than idle chit-chat and a few business cards from business owners you never talked to. The solution is to approach networking forums with the right frame of mind.

Trevor Nel (pictured here), a business consultant who runs networking forum INNER Circle, says many networking sessions are wasted because business owners treat them as social occasions rather than ways to grow profit by linking up with others.

He says many business owners believe they are networking if they hand out as many business cards as they can.

But he believes it’s more important to make face-to-face contact with three people than to hand out 30 business cards.

In many cases, business cards are only used to create a database with which to spam people which is not a very affective way to make new clients, he says.

More of Nel’s key networking tips are:

Listen to other people and try to discover why they have attended the networking session. Ask yourself whether there is anything they can offer you or you can offer them. In this way, even introverted business owners can benefit if they are good listeners, he says.
Establish one-on-one contacts with some of those attending the networking session. Then take them aside and listen to them more intensely or arrange for a face-to-face meeting later.
Business owners should be honest about why they are there and what value they can add to the business or organisation of the person they are meeting with. There are only three reasons why a business consultant would conduct networking: to buy something, to sell something or to get more information on something. Nel says it’s better to hear a “no” from someone in the first five minutes than to go through months of to’ing and fro’ing without anything materialising.
Present another business owner with something that will demonstrate that you are interested in what they had to say. For example, an article or website link.
Don’t discount people because they may not appear to offer your business anything. Nel says business owners should ask others attending networking sessions enough questions because everyone has contacts that you can use.

Hi Trevor,

As far as my Dad is concerned, today for the first time I was able to speak to a medical Doctor who is working with my Dad. She spelt out the reality of the situation, which is: He now has Altzheimer’s, he in incontinent etc etc. He is not going to get better, this is as good as it gets. I don’t fully accept this all, but we now have to start making plans.

We have been told that he has to go into an old age home with frail care. We wanted to bring him to our place, but he needs 24 hour care from professionals. So I am looking for a place that could accommodate my Dad, somewhere in Gauteng at under R5000 a month. Apparently facilities like this have long waiting lists. Could you please ask your network if anyone knows where we could find a place that could accommodate us. My Dad is 82 years old and is basically helpless.

I would appreciate it if you could please put this request out to your network and let’s see what we can find.

Referrals the best way to get clients

WITH more people opening up small businesses than ever before in South Africa, starting and running your own business consultancy is beginning to look like a profitable opportunity. But once your consultancy is up and running how will you source your clients?

seda business brief spoke to three business consultants on the best way to get business in through your door.

Owen Fielding of TEC Solutions says he has always relied upon referrals to obtain clients. He gets clients largely through organisations that assist businesses, such as the Umsobomvu Youth Fund and Khula Enterprise Finance, the government's agency that funds small businesses.

Fielding says he is always nervous about publishing his name on public databases because of the quality of clients he may then receive. The organisations that refer clients to him act as screeners which means he won't be "sitting with 200 guys who want to open up spaza shops", he says.

Herman Rall, a tax advisor, who runs Rall Consultancy says he relies on five methods to source clients, namely:
· Word of mouth from existing clients.
· Through his membership to INNER Circle, a networking group for business owners.
· From referrals that he gets through two independent contractors. They run adverts on various websites and direct clients to him. He grants the referees 10% commission on every invoice he bills clients he receives through the contractors.
· Through agreements he has with three different company registration offices.
· Through his website which he recently redesigned using manuals he downloaded from www.marketingtips.com. He says he paid $250 (about R1 700) for the manuals, but says it was worth it because 20% of all visitors to his site convert into sales.

Bernard Schoeman (pictured above) of Wiseguys Consultants and Accountants says he has placed his consultancy's name on many government databases, but says the problem with databases is that you can soon find yourself buried amongst thousands of other names.

He says even if your name is on a database you still have to go out and meet with the prospective client before you can consider doing business with them.

Printing and distributing fliers is another way to get clients. He says even though he was only able to get one client from the R2 000 he spent on printing fliers, it was worth it because he believes that one client will be able to refer other prospective clients to him.

I would like to commend the management of The PALAZZO hotel and their staff on being one of the few venues in Johannesburg who have demonstrated a thorough grasp of the concept of service excellence.
